A BBC news story about the growing threat of corporate espionage that UK companies face featured a WhiteRock counter surveillance operation. The story was aired on the channel’s Breakfast Show on 1 May.
According to the BBC business correspondent Joe Lynam, company insider spies are becoming more common, with bribery and bugging playing a large part in businesses keeping up with the competition. A variety of James Bond-style eavesdropping gadgets were examined in the story whilst WhiteRock's CEO, Crispin Sturrock, explained the counter surveillance measures the company provides to combat the rising threat of commercial espionage.
According to Andy Williams, head of security for the global investment bank Nomura, companies across the world potentially lose billions of pounds every year due to successfully conducted industrial espionage and trade secret thefts by their rivals. In research published by the UK Government in February 2011, it was stated that the British companies alone lose an estimated 21 billion pounds every year as a result of industrial property theft, part of which is commercial espionage.
